Yosemite Silver Ski Race- The Yosemite Ski team coach, Tom Medema, said “welcome to New Hampshire” in describing the cold and icy conditions on Saturday March 15. Some of the highlights: J4 Women: The Colonias Sisters: Kendal Colonias, 1st on Sunday and 2nd on Saturday. Jordan Colonias, 1st on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday. After 4 clean, fast runs, Jordyn was the 2nd Fastest Woman of the weekend, missing the Silver Ski Award by less than a second after 4 runs!!! WOW!

In the J5 Ladies Big G, Keely Cashman took first place both days. Not to be outdone by his little sister, Jordan Cashman matched the effort by taking home first place both days in J5 Men. The J4s also stepped up the pace with Mackenzie Comstock taking first place both days in the Super -G and Erik Arvidsson taking first place on Saturday in the Mens J4 SG.
The rest of the team also was skiing hot!
In Saturday's J5 Ladies big G, Libby Rimmer placed 4th with Clair Bertrand hot on heels in 5th.The girls returned on Sunday with another 4th for Libby and 5th for Claire.

On Saturday, Jordyn Colonias placed 4th in the J4 Ladies SG followed by sister Kendyl in 7th. Bailey Rimmer took 9th and Sydney Nikoloff 20th. On Sunday, Jordyn jumped up to take 2nd place, Kendyl finished 7th, Bailey took 8th and Sydney moved up to 19th.

In the J3 Ladies competition on Saturday, Maddy Berry took 4th, Aline Bertrand was in at 5th, followed by Shelby White at 6th. On Sunday, Maddy moved up to the podium taking 3rd with Shelby in at 5th.
Congratulations to all....great racing
Big Hill Bonanza at Boreal Forrest Ferguson was the Big Story at the Big Hill Bonanza Race at Boreal last weekend. The event which consisted of 2 SL and one GS was compressed into 2 days instead of 3 due to weather considerations. In the GS event, held Saturday afternoon saw Forrest rip back to back runs to finish 10th overall and first among J3 Men....simply a fabulous accomplishment for a first year J3....Congratulations!!
Bear Valley's other J3s that competed in the GS included Hunter Capilla (33rd), Ben Gilbert (43rd) and Justice Rasmussen who had a disappointing first run missing a gate and had to hike. Caitlin Porter finished 34th for the women.
In Friday night's SL, Forrest placed 32nd overall and 7th among J3s. Ben Gilbert placed 71st/33rd among J3s. On Saturday's SL Forest placed 38th overall and 11th among J3s. Ben finished 63rd overall and 31st among J3s. No other Bear Valley J3 Men competed in the SL events.

Dodge Ridge GS Race Results
The Dodge Ridge Race Team played host this weekend to the Far West USSA ski race teams. It was the firs GS race for the year. The Central Series Teams that participated in this race were Bear Valley, Dodge Ridge, Sierra Summit and Yosemite Winter Club. Even though the conditions were tough, there were still over 100 young ambitious athletes that performed well. It was cold and blustery at the top of the course. Everyone had to keep moving to stay warm. The Dodge Ridge Staff even brought up blankets to keep the starting line staff warm. The race was canceled on Sunday due to Dodge Ridge receiving too much snow on Saturday night, which made it difficult to be able to set the course for Sunday. The results from Saturday's times determined the outcome for the weekend.
The Bear Valley Race team did very well. Jordan Cashman had the fastest overall time of all the competitors in the event. Jordan also took 1st place in the Mens/J5 class. The Dodge Ridge Event also featured a breakthrough performance from Bailey Rimmer. She skied to her first class win when she skied to the top spot for the J4/Ladies.
The battle for the J4/Mens class was the closest of the day. Mikael Proper took the top time by just 5 one hundredths of the second over fellow Bear Valley teammate Erik Arvidsson and both their times were just fractions of a second behind the overall fastest times turned in by Jordan. Max Naumcheff and Lucas Newcomb from the Yosemite Winter Club skied into third and fourth positions in this hotly contested class.
With Bailey Rimmer cruising to her first class win in the J4/Womens Class. Sierra Summit's Annabelle Beecher skied into second place. Dodge Ridge's Taylor Howell brought home the third place trophy on her home course. After an uncharacteristic fall on her first run, Bear Valley's Mackenzie Comstock made up a tremendous amount of time on her second run skied into Fourth in the class.
The J5/Mens class was the largest on the field. The aforementioned Jordan Cashman took home the top spot. The Yosemite Winter Club's Andrew Hindes slid into second and Dodge Ridge's Spencer Crist and Erik Haket used their home court advantage to sew up the third and forth spots. Farther back in the pack some of the first year Bear Valley J5 team members are starting to climb in the results. Granger Hamilton scored in the points and received 10th place in the J5 Mens division, 14th place in the J6/J5 overall. Another first year team member, Tim Lunsford jumped several places into 17th place overall as well!
In the young J6/Mens class Sierra Summit's Timothy Bender was first. Dodge Ridge's Nick Pastenieks was second and John McGory was third. In the J6/Ladies Sierra Summit's Caroline Cole skied in first while Dodge Ridge's Kaylee McClenahan and Mckenzie Gast took second and third.
The J3/Ladies class featured great performances from Dodge Ridge's Shelby Seabaugh in first and Lynn Cronin in second. Bear Valley brought home third and forth place positions from Shelby White and Aline Bertrand. In the J3/Mens class Sierra Summit's Dan Hrynezuk took top honors followed by Dodge Ridge's Clancy McConnell and Walter Wesson
The J5/Ladies class had another great performance from one of those blazing fast Cashman kids. Bear Valley's Keely Cashman and Claire Bertrand took first and second. Dodge Ridge's Emily Ryan sped into third spot.
The Central Series teams will meet again on March 1st and 2nd in Sierra Summit for a GS and SG Race.

J3s Compete at Sugar Bowl JO Qualifier Slalom
Bear Valley's J3s competed at the first Junior Olympic Qualifying race of the season on Jan 19-21 at Sugar Bowl. The field included 89 men and 72 ladies competing for points toward qualifying for this year's JOs in Bogus Basin, ID.
The weekend started out with favorable weather but snow showers moved in by Monday making visibility and snow conditions a bit tough. Nonetheless our team put in a good performance on all three days.
On Saturday, Hunter Capilla put in a brilliant performance placing 14th. Zac Comstock came in 23rd; Forrest Ferguson was 41st. For the ladies, Caitlin Porter took 32nd and Aline Bertrand came in 39th.
Sunday saw Zac Comstock moving up one position to 22nd; Hunter on his heels at 23rd and Justice Rasmussen in at number 40 after a disappointing second run. The ladies found their ski legs on Sunday with Alexis Habiger taking 19th just 3 hundredths off Caitlin in at 20th. Maddy Berry came in a respectable 34th followed by Aline at 39th.
On Monday, Justice led the pack taking 13th place. Zac followed in 19th and Forrest was not far behind at 22nd. Forrest also walked away with the "Hard Charger Award" given to the competitor who moves up the greatest number of places from their start position....Congrats!
For the ladies, Monday saw Alexis placing 30th followed by Caitlin at 31st. Aline consistently once again placed 39th.
Sugar Bowl Race Department would like to extend its special thanks to Mark Ferguson who was a terrific help on Monday with course maintenance. The race crew was short handed and Mark pitched in to help keep the course in shape.

John and Sandee Watts Honored
John and Sandee Watts were recognized for their contributions to BVSEF with the Bear Valley Race Team Building being dedicated in their honor. The award took place at the 2008 Bear Valley Central Series Awards Dinner which was held at Bear Valley Mountain Resort on Saturday Jan 12.
John and Sandee's son, John Henry, was on hand for the presentation of a plaque which was inscribed:
John and Sandee Watts Race Team Building
"In recognition of their unrelenting support of the Bear Valley Snow Sports Education Foundation and ski team athletes at the Bear Valley Mountain Resort, this building is named in their honor"
Over the years, John and Sandee have been vital participants in BVSEF with John serving as president of the Foundation until he stepped down late last year. Both John and Sandee have been the mainstay of the volunteer support for the Far West Central Series SL race which is held annually at Bear Valley. As Chief Gate Judge, John runs a very expert crew of gate judges and Sandee can be found at the leaderboard logging race results.
In addition to their efforts on the Bear Valley races, John and Sandee were instrumental in returning the Race Building back to from Mountain Operations to the Race Team and BVSEF. They not only oversaw the renovation of the building but did a huge amount of the work themselves. Through their efforts, BVSEF not only has a terrific facility for the race team to meet but we have the finest facility for race timing in the Central Sierra.
Much is owed to John and Sandee and with the dedication of the Race Team Building, their efforts certainly will not be forgotten.

The Ski Season is on the way.....really!
Winter has been teasing us.....Bear Valley has reported that it has snowed 5 times so far this season. But take a look at the webcam on bearvalley.com and it is hard to tell it is not August. Not to worry, the snow will come and, yes, we will ski and ride for yet another season.
The Bear Valley Pre-Season Meeting was well attended on Sunday Oct 14. Mike Young provided the update for this year's programs. Devo Coaches Dave Maminski and Phillip Meredith provided an informative orientation for the Devo and Freeride program while Head Race Team Coach John Colonias provided and update for the Race Team.
Mike Comstock explained the role of BVSEF in supporting all the teams. Although much of the support is directed to the Race program, the other programs do benefit as well. Mike pointed out that there are opportunities for parents to participate in BVSEF and encouraged parents of Devo and Freeride members to come forth with suggestions and become involved.
The SkiSwap sponsored by BVSEF proved to be a successful event for members to upgrade ski equipment and shed the gear the kids have outgrown. This was especially helpful to some of our new race families who received a bit of assistance in navigating the "ins and outs" of racing gear.
While the crystal ball does not tell us when the snow will fall, we have hopes to see the Mountain open by Dec 8......

 Season-end Championships-Bear Valley scores BIG!
The Championships at the end of the season is Bear Valley Race Teams opportunity to compete against the entire Far West Division and see how we stack up. This year showed that BV Racers are as good as they come. The Championship races for the J4 and J5 racers also count toward the Central Series Maury Rasmussen Trophy, so there is a lot on the line as the season draws to an end.
First, in recapping how our team did in individual results at the FW J4/J5 Championships at Sugar Bowl Bear Valley's J4 and J5 racers put in a very strong performance at the Far West Championships at Sugar Bowl. In fact, we had more podium and top 15 finishes this year than we have had in recent history!
- J4 Mens Super G - Forest Ferguson placed 3rd
- J5 Mens Slalom - Erik Arvidsson place 2nd; Mikael Proper placed 11th; Jordan Cashman came in 12th
- J5 Mens GS - Erik Arvidsson placed 6th; Jordan Cashman placed 15th
- J5 Mens Big G - Mikael Proper placed 2nd
Moving on to the J3s, Bear Valley Racers Alexis Habiger, Camille Young, Hunter Capilla and Zac Comstock joined over 200 racers competing on a very difficult and challenging GS set on Squaw's Olympia GS course. This was an Open Race for Mid-J3s so while our racers did not place in the top tier, they were agressive competitors and certainly demonstrated their ability. Zac, Camille and Hunter all had runs where they DQ'd or DNF'd but when you look at the other racers who suffered the same fate, they included some of the top seeds in the event....so nothing to be ashamed of!
When you look at the results at the link below; make sure you check how our racers faired against other competitors with the same birth year. This is the best indicator of how we stack up. Alexis was the 6th best first year J3 in Friday's Ladies GS; Zac was the 7th best first year J3 in the Men's GS on Friday.
For the Central Series individual awards, the best 6 race finishes were counted toward the season award with points being awarded on a World Cup scoring basis.
Overall Season Awards J3 Men- Cody Olhau, who joined the race team mid-season place 7th J4 Ladies - Maddy Berry 2nd, Mackenzie Comstock- 3rd, Jordyn Colonias - 5th, Kendyl Colonias - 8th, Michele Proper - 10th J4 Men - Forrest Ferguson-1st, Ben Gilbert-3rd, Colin Glenday-7th, Stefan Nilsen-8th J5 Ladies- Keely Cashman-1st(and she's actually a J6!), Bailey Rimmer-2nd, Claire Bertrand-7th, Libby Rimmer 8th(also a J6!) J5 Men - Erik Arvidsson-1st, Mikael Proper-2nd, Jordan Cashman-3rd, Karl Arvidsson-7th (also a J6) J6 Ladies- Alyx Fairman- 3rd J6 Men- Cooper White-1st, Noah Cashman-5th(and he's a J7....these Cashman kids just can't compete with kids their own age!)
And finally, in the competition for the Maury Rasmussen overall team award Bear Valley took first place for the second year in a row. With a commanding 10542 Team Points, the Bear Valley Race Team beat Dodge Ridge, Sierra Summit and Yosemite Winter Club for the Central Series Maury Rasmussen Cup. Dodge Ridge placed second with 6385 team points followed by Sierra Summit with 5455. Yosemite, by far the smallest team with only 11 members racked up an impressive 2708 points.

Mid Season Update
As we approach the last half of the season, we find Mother Nature has thrown every trick at the world of ski racing. With scarce snow at the start of the season, race after race was cancelled. That was followed by a series of warm storms that saw the J4/J5 race cancelled at Dodge Ridge because of rain! Of course the snow then followed and boy did it! Now we were faced with heavy snow and blizzard conditions that once again cancelled races.
However, ski racers being the tough athletes they are, never give up. A number of races did come off well. Here are some highlights:
J3 Jim Bollingmo JO Qualifier SL Braving -2 degree temperatures, Bear Valley's J3s competed in their first Junior Olympic qualifier SL race last Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Snow Summit. The conditions made the race course icy but our athletes still put in a good performance. Racers Alexis Habiger, Hunter Capilla, Zac Comstock and Justice Rasmussen competed against the Far West's best with a starting field of 80 boys and 50 girls. The JO Qualifiers, SL, GS, SG take the top 5 finishes out of 9 events. Using World Cup point scoring the top 26 boys and top 21 girls qualify for the Junior Olympics.
Yosemite Silver Ski Slalom This year, the traditional Silver Ski Slalom competition counts toward the Maury Rasmussen Central Series team trophy. With the points on the line, Bear Valley's J4s and J5s headed off to Badger Pass. Not only did our team do very well but our own Erik Arvidsson clocked the fastest boys time to take the prestigious Silver Ski Award. Caitlin Porter of Yosemite Winter Club handily walked away with the girl's Silver Ski Award.
J3 Wild West JO GS Qualifier Bear Valley's 5 J3 racers competed against the Far West's J3s at Squaw Valley to earn points toward a spot in the upcoming Junior Olympics. The field included 90 boys and 60 girls. With the competition heating up at this level error free runs with speeds on the edge is what it takes to place well. In fields of this size finishing in the top third is commendable. Our racers did very well against a tough field that includes many competitors who train in full time programs at Tahoe.
J3 JO Super G Qualifier Mother Nature blasted the Sierras the week before the J3 JO Super G Qualifier at Northstar. The even was scheduled for 3 days beginning Friday Feb 23 through Sunday Feb 25. Heavy snow fall caused the course to be too soft for Friday's race causing day one to be cancelled. Race organizers pulled out all the stops for Saturday and were able to get 2 of the three races completed albeit with no training runs. Race 3 scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to heavy snows.
J4 Festival Each year the best J4s have a chance to join the tough ranks of the J3s at the Junior Olympics. Bear Valley racers Madison Berry, Ben Gilbert and Forest Ferguson were invited to atthend the J$ Festival. The format of this event grueling. With only 18 girls and 18 boys, the competition consists of 3 one run slaloms and 3 1 run GS races. Although none of our racers made the JOs, we did have a couple of top ten finishes for Ben Gilbert and Forrest Ferguson. Forrest was certainly giving it his all with a number of DNFs...but then at this type of event, the winners are those who go "all out". Maddy Berry was our most consistent with 3 13th places but in some races less than a second out of the top 10.
There are still a few races left which will get our racers ready before the Championships at the end of March. We will also be announcing a couple of fun events before the end of the season.
Check back soon....
